Can we please have more commercials like this?
In class today, we had a lovely discussion how the psychology of color, the ideology of stereotypical color assignment, and how it all relates in cinema and the success of movies depending on the societies creating movies and the societies viewing those movies and used this video as an example of the societal norm of “girls only like sweet, pink, sensitive things”. It was very insightful and got the class out of taking a quiz.
Also, Jesus fuck we need more advertisements like this.
FOR REALSIES, Y’ALL. My niece is like the MOST gendered 6 year old you can imagine - she’s sort of like Ramona but in a world of PINK and PRINCESSES and CHEERLEADERS and HAIRBOWS.
I got her a GoldieBlox set for her 6th birthday a few weeks ago and she LOVES it to the point that Santa will be bringing her an expansion pack.
However, I think part of the reason she loves it is because it is still slightly gendered, but on purpose. In her world, the pink and purple and “girly” colored toys are hers, and everything else is her brother’s (though she will happily steal them if she thinks he has joy and she does not - such a big sister). The fact that these are toys that involve solving problems and making things happen through make them SO AWESOME.
So, if you have a little girl you’re holiday shopping for this season, consider some GoldieBlox. They’re fun and everyone loves them and it supports an awesome company with a great message. Also show them this video. My niece keeps asking my sister to play it again and again and again.
